You know it’s starting to cool down when you beg You know it’s starting to cool down when you begin to see skies like this after sunset – cold nights ahead! Perfect for snuggling up in front of the fire with a hot drink and a good book or movie. The Bunya Mountains is one of the few places in Queensland where you get to experience a real cold season, with frost, fog, icicles and the occasional snow – and beautiful clear, crisp days like this followed by a serene ombre sky. Just perfect!

Thanks to Nyssa Lambkin for the great photo.
Keep your eyes peeled for tawny frogmouths at the Keep your eyes peeled for tawny frogmouths at the Bunya Mountains – these nocturnal, carnivorous birds can often be seen on fenceposts or sitting low down in trees around the mountain. They are good at camouflaging themselves however, so you’ll have to look closely, as they often resemble a broken off branch rather than a bird. The only thing that might give them away is their big yellow eyes, which you’ll be able to see peering out from amongst their tawny plumage. They have a stealthy, silent flight as they catch insects, worms and slugs – and occasionally small mammals, reptiles and birds. These intriguing birds are in decline across Australia, so make sure you appreciate the sight if you happen to see one.

Clear skies, countless stars The Bunya Mountains Clear skies, countless stars

The Bunya Mountains offers one of the best seats in the house to view a sky full of stars, with many perfect vantage points to gaze up at the cosmos. You’ll find some of the darkest skies in Queensland here, and the autumn skies are often clear and filled with innumerable stars and galaxies to marvel at. The Milky Way contains billions of stars, and you’ll feel like most of them are shining down on you when you gaze up at the Bunya Mountains sky. Get lost in the heavens with an awe-inspiring night of stargazing, where you can soak up the full splendour of the night sky.

Bring binoculars or a telescope and use a stargazing app to help you identify the stars and constellations, or simply relax and take in the beauty of the star-bright sky. It can be chilly at night, so bring some warm clothes, but the endless views of thousands of shimmering stars will make it all worthwhile!

(Thanks to Barry Scott for the truly spectacular photo.)
